About me
Hiya papaya, my name is Lion. I am a trans artist who creates what I call broken doll art. Broken doll art consists of three main concepts. First is the fetishization of queer people aka dolls (a commonly used term for trans women) who are at a far greater risk of facing sexual violence and harassment despite being called monsters and ugly by the perpetrators of such violence. I demonstrate this is my art by turning myself into a delicate monster doll. Methods I use are practical effects such as SFX makeup and set design, wardrobe typical gothic inspired ranging anywhere from vampire to witch, and traditional photography methods such as lighting, staging, camera obscure, etc. I use these methods to showcase how people view us as monsters while also highlighting gender identity and self-expression. Secondly is the prevalence of bullying queer, neurodivergent, and alternative youths face from parents and peers that can lead to a loss of childhood and an increased suicide rate. I showcase these concepts with the use of childhood items such as stuffed animals and toys that are commonly enjoyed by adults who are mistreated as children in my art by altering them into cute little monsters using sowing and other modification methods. Thirdly are that commonly sexual assault victims are described as broken by themselves and others. Dehumanization faced by sexual assault victims can make them feel like they don’t have a purpose as if others see them as objects rather than living breathing human beings. I take this idea by giving items that people often discard or look at as useless such as animal bones and toys from places like the Goodwill bins a new purpose. My goal is to inspire and comfort underprivileged people as I believe in finding the beauty in trauma taking inspiration from the idea of kintsugi. I live by the idea that “art is supposed to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable” from poet Cesar A. Cruz.
